Web Wise Business - 3 Free Tips

Website analytics play a pretty important part in both determining how much value you get from your website (in terms of traffic, enquiries and business etc), but also in finding areas in which you could make your website even more successful.

There are many different website statistics and analytics packages on the market, some are free, while some require payment. Our preference is to use the freely available Google Analytics, which offers plenty of valuable information about your website right away, but can also be customised to provide more in depth statistics.

So how can the statistics and information found in your site analytics help you improve your website?

This month's Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at three prominent statistics and the types of improvements they suggest you should make:

1. Bounce Rate

Bounce rate refers to the percentage of visitors who have arrived on your website before quickly leaving to visit another website without viewing more than one page. Ideally you want this statistic to be low, while the average level for different types of sites (brochure, e-commerce, news, events etc) will vary, below 45% is pretty good going.

If you find you have a high bounce rate, you might want to consider more clearly defining your content and creating realistic visitor expectations in any directory listings or advertising before they land on your website. Someone clicking on a Google Ad for car parts which takes them to a photographers website isn't likely to stick around for long!

It is also worth considering how accessible your website is to users - how easy is it to navigate / find what your looking for, how intuitive is it to use etc.

2. Average Time on Site

This refers to the average amount of time visitors are spending on your website. Obviously, in most cases, the longer the better - though for some e-commerce sites, the quicker a visitors becomes a customer, the better.

If you find the average time visitors spend on your website to be low, you may want to consider how engaging and relevant the content on your website is likely to be to them - do you provide value enough to make them stick about?

Design can also be an important factor - visitors are more likely to spend time on an attractive, well presented website, than a relic of the late 90's.

3. % New Visits

This refers to the percentage of visitors to your website who have not visited before. When looking at this statistic, it is worth taking into account both the total number of visits to the website and the time period which you are looking at. While it is good to have a steady stream of new visitors to your website, if none of them comeback then chances are something isn't right!

If your find the percentage of new visits statistic to be unusually high, without any correlation to promotions such as competitions, then you may want to again consider the quality of the content you provide, along with how you maintain regular contact with visitors / customers. E-newsletters can be a very powerful tool for bringing visitors back to your website on a regular basis.

3 Free Tips - How To Setup an Effective PPC Campaign

No doubt many of you are familiar with the term Pay Per Click advertising, or PPC, but for those who aren't, the image below shows the most commonly presented example - the adverts to the right and above of the organic search results.

Pay Per Click (PPC) Ad's example

While Google offer a fairly comprehensive volume of information on how to set up and manage a PPC account in their AdWords help pages, there are a few things they don't mention, or don't emphasise enough that can help make your Pay Per Click Campaign much more effective.

Therefore, this months 3 Free Tips are a few snippets of information from Web Wise Business on how to make your PPC campaign budget go further and get more traffic.

1. #1 isn't always the #1 place to be

While naturally most people will believe that the top positioned ad will be the best placed, this isn't always the case. Besides being disproportionately more expensive per click, meaning you will burn through your budget quicker, the top ad is also a prime candidate for drawing more wasted clicks and bounces.

It is always worth testing your ad in different positions over the course of a few weeks, working out which position performs best for you on which terms and then picking based on the best value for money. Different markets operate very differently in PPC also. For example, some can be fiercely competitive for top positions marketing products which consumers are in a hurry to find, while others, for services consumers are likely to spend some time browsing for are better placed towards the mid-positions in order to catch the eye.

Of course, that's not to say that being the top ad is never the best place to be, but in order to ensure the best return on investment you need to be sure that your landing page is going to convert, especially if your paying the top prices!

2. Landing and take-off

As alluded to above, the page your advert directs visitors who click through onto is of vital importance in ensuring your advertising money is well spent. While it may be tempting to simply direct people to the home page of your wonderful website an allow them to spend hours perusing all your wonderful content/products before spending money with you, in reality, this rarely happens.

If your advert promotes a particular product or service, give the visitor what they expect by taking them to the specific page for that product or service, or be prepared to watch them take off and see your money spent for no gain.

If visitors are arriving on your specific landing page and still leaving without performing an action of value to you (inquiry, purchase etc), then consider altering/improving the landing page to really sell why the visitor should do what you want them to do.

3. Match point

When setting up your PPC campaign, you may notice the option to choose how Google matches search terms to your adverts. The three main types are broad (match to everything containing the word(s) used), phrase (match to everything containing the word(s) used in this order) and exact (match only to the exact word or phrase given).

These options are important in helping you to qualify your traffic, so it's worth putting some thought into how you use them to ensure you get the best return from your campaign budget.

3 Free Tips - How To Get Customers To Share Your Content Online

The way in which content is written for the internet has changed a lot in the last 4-5 years. Previously, content was written for Google and other search engine "spiders" (the programs that "crawl", or read, websites and index them in search results), including plenty of keyword terms with the user's reading experience a bit of an after-thought.

Thankfully now things are a little different, with content written much more with the reader's experience in mind.

However, while in the past you could simply stuff paragraphs of text full of one or two keywords, ensuring the search engines would pick up on it and users would find it in search results for that term, nowadays you have to be a bit more saavy when creating content. The widespread adoption of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc mean that the sharing of content is now an important method of generating significant volumes of traffic to your website.

But how can you make it more likely that people who read articles / blog posts / news / press releases etc on your website will share this content with their networks?

This months Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at some things you can do to help get visitors and customers to share your content with others online.

1. Make It Easy To Digest

The more quickly and easily someone visiting your website can decide whether your content will be of use to them or is worth reading, the more likely they are to both a) read it, and b) share it with their friends / colleagues / networks.

Lists, bullet points and images are all good ways of getting the point across and keep people scrolling. If it needs to be a long piece,  break it into clearly headlined chunks with the headline summarising the content in each section.

2. Compelling Headlines / Titles & Opening Paragraphs

A good title is one that either promises something of value, or is intriguing enough to capture attention. But bear in mind that Twitter has a 140 character limit, so try to keep it succinct enough to make it easily re-tweetable.

The opening paragraph is also important as it has to continue the promise made in the title and explain what the rest of the article will be about in order to keep the visitor reading.

3. Make It REALLY Easy To Share

If you look at the bottom of this article, you will see options to post this article to Twitter, Facebook etc. By clicking these buttons a page will open that takes you to your Twitter / Facebook etc page with the link to this article ready to post with the simple click of a button. Offering simple ways to share your content such as this take almost all the effort out of doing so for the visitor, increasing the likelihood they will do so! (Yes, at the moment our's isn't the easiest to spot, we are working on making our version a bit better!)

3 Free Tips - How To Improve Conversions

Anyone familiar with business or sales will know the commonly held belief that "certain leads can never be converted".

It's frustrating when you get lots of leads of a particular type but they never convert isn't it?

Maybe you or your sales team try and try but they still don't pass the finish line, or maybe your sales team realise that some leads of a particular type almost never convert so they simply don't expend a lot of effort on them?

But, have you ever considered that maybe your just not offering the right conversion opportunity for these types of leads?

This month's Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at three simple, highly actionable ways in which you can improve the number of conversions you make through, or as a result of your website, even from "lost cause" leads.

It's a bit of a long one, but we're sure you'll find some interesting tips worth taking note of!

1. Definition of a Successful Conversion

The first thing worth considering when aiming to increase the conversion rate of "lost cause" leads is your definition of a successful conversion.

A successful conversion doesn't always need to mean a sale. There are other actions that a visitor can take that can still benefit your website and business, without them spending money with you.

2. Link Building Leads

With the continued growth and development of the "Social Web" as a result of applications such as Facebook and Twitter, public comment and opinion has developed online into the same powerful sales mechanism as offline word of mouth. Therefore, wouldn't it make sense to offer something for free to "lost cause" leads that costs you very little, but which can be used to encourage such online public comment and sharing?

Consider, for example, the benefit of offering a free resource or sample service which provides enough value to a visitor to give it a go. If you find yourself with a "lost cause" lead, instead of discarding it as such and potentially losing it and any intangible benefits forever, why not simply contact them to suggest they try your free resource or service.

By doing this you create a future contact point for a message such as:

An example of an additional conversion opportunity

Doing this allows you to save time chasing low percentage leads, while at the same time creating opportunities for extra "free" PR and links to your website - driving more traffic and helping with your search engine optimisation efforts. While not a sale, the action is still a "win".

3. Visitor Self-Identification

Taking the previous tip one step further, you could allow visitors to identify themselves, deciding which conversion opportunity best fits them, thereby saving you the time of having to.

Visitor Self-Identification OptionsFor an online store, selling goods to consumers, an example of this would be something similar to the diagram on the right.

In this example, visitors are presented two clear conversion opportunities - buy the item now, or tell your friends and family.

Some people may worry that, by presenting an option other than "Buy Now", you are giving the visitor an opportunity not to convert, this isn't the case. Instead, visitors who would convert normally, without the "Tell a friend" option, will still convert as before, but now those who would normally decide against buying (maybe because they decide they can't afford it / aren't sure it's right for them, etc) can still take an action that provides value to the owner of the site.

3 Free Tips - How To Know How Visitors Use Your Website

Last month's "3 Free Tips" looked at "How to Use Your Call To Action", providing some pointers on how to improve the likelihood that visitors to your website convert to business / users / donators etc.

But how can you find out what to tweak on your website in order to improve conversions without first knowing more about what visitors are doing and how much time they are spending on your website?

This month's Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at How To Know How Visitors Use Your Website.

1. Website Analytics

A quick look at your website analytics can provide the answers to many questions about which pages on your website are popular, how long people spend on the site, how they arrived there etc. If you don't have, or don't know if you have website analytics, make sure your web developer adds them to your site and makes them available to you. It's not a difficult or time consuming thing to do and really, all web developers should be including some kind of analytics package on sites they develop as there are numerous freely available options - the best of which is probably Google Analytics.

2. User Testing

Another method for developing an understanding of how visitors interact with your website is to conduct user testing. Much like conducting scientific testing, this requires you to find some willing participants who will sit down in front of a computer and look at your website while you watch. The results of user testing can vary in terms of how worth-while they are to conduct depending upon how well you observe the user's interaction and how much direction you give them prior to letting them loose on your site etc.

There are a number of companies offering website user testing services for a moderate fee and they will provide video play-back and analysis of what takes place in any tests. Ultimately, it depends how much you want to spend.

3. User Monitoring Software

If you don't want the hastle of setting up and analysing user testing of your website, then there are a number of "User Monitoring" software packages available to help you see how actual "live" users are interacting with your website, allowing you to make your own assumptions on any changes or tweaks that may be required in terms of layout, design etc.

Heat mapping and click tracking software, for example, can show you where visitors are most commonly moving the cursor around on your website's pages and which links or buttons receive the most clicks. Information such as this can be valuable in helping you improve the strength of your website's sales message or call to action, turning those users who seem to dither and then leave into conversions.

While these software packages can typically cost a bit more than you may usually spend on your website on a monthly basis, the additional conversions they can help generate could be priceless.

So there you have it, 3 ways to help you find out what works and what doesn't when it comes to generating conversions on your website.

If you are looking for a web developer who can help you with any of these things then call the team at Web Wise Business on 01786 430 076, or email us.

3 Free Tips - How To Use Your Call To Action On Your Website

The "Call To Action" is one of the most important aspects of any website, whether charity, public sector, or corporate organisation.

If you don't make it as clear as possible to visitors as to what you want them to do next once they arrive on your website then chances are they will be significantly less likely to take the desired action, be that make a purchase, make a donation or request information.

Therefore, this month's Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at How To Use Your Call To Action.

1. Spread the Word

It's not enough to just have your call to action featuring once on the page. If you really want people to pick up the phone / email you / buy your products / donate etc. then you need to spread your call to action throughout the content on your page. If someone is reading all your content about what you offer then make sure that in that content you are also reminding them "what to do now".

2. Appeal to the Senses

When visitors view your website, they will not only be reading the content, but also viewing the imagery and graphics. Everybody consumes information differently, some people like reading text, others simply skim and look at the pretty pictures. Therefore, you should make sure that your call to action appeals to these different types of people by having a "visual call to action" on the page as well as a written one. Graphics telling visitors to "Buy Now" with an image of a sofa behind a bold red label with such text make it pretty clear what you think the visitor should do!

3. Be Specific

Don't simply use one call to action throughout your website. Try to be specific with the call to action for each page, making it relevant to the content that is on the page. If your describing your world class IT recruitment services on one of your service pages then the call to action on the page shouldn't simply say "Contact us about our recruitment services", instead it should be something more along the lines of "IT Recruitment needs? - Contact us for world class IT recruitment on ....".

Simple yes? It's also incredibly easy to action, so what are you waiting for? Start telling your visitors how to convert by speaking with your web developer.

Or, if your looking for web developers who can help with your website, contact us on 01786 430 076.

3 Free Tips - How To Get More Followers On Twitter

Twitter  isn't new to many people nowadays. You can't fail to have seen it mentioned in the news or on tv, or especially online. However, at Web Wise Business, we still regularly get asked how to really make the most out of the social media platform to promote your organisation or business.

One of the first things you need to do to have any success with Twitter for your business is build up a following. Without people seeing what your saying, there isn't much value in saying it!

Therefore, thing month's 3 Free Tips looks at How To Get More Followers on Twitter.

1. Follow Others

A good way to build a following relatively quickly and with a great degree of control is to simply follow a large number of people. As a general rule, for every 3 people you follow, 1 will follow you back. Therefore, a good place to start would be to search out Twitter users who either fall into your target client type (by industry, geography, etc), or who regularly talk about the industry or area your organisation is involved in. Having these users follow you back is of far more value than random, unqualified followers that, while making up the numbers, are less likely to offer anything in the way of value (ReTweet's, references, links to your website etc).

2. Get Involved

Getting involved in conversations with other Twitter users is another good way of aquiring followers. People who see you discussing a topic with someone they are already following are more likely to follow you too than they would be if you simply lurk in the shadows saying nothing afterall!

This can work especially well if the people you are getting involved in discussion with are "influential" in either your industry, to your target audience, or just on Twitter in general (i.e. those with lots of followers).

3. Competitions

There have been lots of great examples of how competitions can help boost your Twitter following recently. We have seen users offering the chance to win a free Apple iPad or Google Nexus One phone simply by following the user. Naturally, the opportunity to win something for completing a simple task such as this means that you can potentially get thousands of followers in the space of a day, particularly if part of their entry requires them to Tweet a message promoting the competition.

So there you have it, three pretty quick and simple methods to build a following on Twitter. For a little more detail on this topic, why not check out Andrew and Alex's video discussion on the subject of How to Get More Twitter Followers.

3 Free Tips - How To Avoid Duplicate Content Issueshttp://www.webwisebusiness.co.uk/tabid/128/default.aspx?article=3+Free+Tips++How+To+Avoid+Duplicate+Content+Issues 1583 Free Tips on how to avoid the issues that duplicate content can create on your website and it's impact on search engine rankings.Wed, 27 Jan 2010 00:00:003 Free Tips - How To Avoid Duplicate Content Issues3 Free Tips on how to avoid the issues that duplicate content can create on your website and it's impact on search engine rankings.
How To Avoid Duplicate Content on Your Website - 3 Free Tips

This month's Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at the issue of duplicate content and offers some handy advice on how to avoid this occuring on your website and hampering your search engine rankings.

Now the content this month may be a bit more technical than we usually cover, however it can be very important for your website, so if your unsure of whether your website currently has any issues with duplicate content, contact your web developer or feel free to contact us to see if we can help.

But first, what is duplicate content?

Duplicate content is the term used to describe identical content that appears in more than one location (URL) on the internet. This is a problem because when there are multiple instances of the same content, it makes it difficult for the search engines to determine which instance is the most relevant to a given search term, and therefore difficult to determine an order for rankings. In order to provide the best experience for their users, the search engines will typically only display one instance of the content in their results, rather than all of the various versions. This can result in the page you really want to appear in the search results being omitted entirely. Not good!

1. Minimise Similar Content

Rather than having a page about blue used cars and a page about red used cars on your website with 99% of the same content, where the only real differentiator is the colour attributed, consider either expanding the content on those pages to include unqiue, relevant content for each URL, or consolidating the pages into one page which describes cars both red and blue, and which is highly relevant to searches for used cars.

2. 301 Redirect

A 301 redirect is often the best method of dealing with duplicate content issues on your website. This basically involves inserting some code into your "duplicate" page that redirects the search engines to the original content page. The benefit of this is that, when multiple pages with the potential to rank well are effectively combined into one page, they gain a stronger relevancy for search terms relating to the content they display. Further to this, they are no longer directly competing with each other for rankings for the same terms and therefore this positively impacts upon their ability to rank well in the search engines.

3. Rel=canonical

An alternative means of dealing with duplicate content on your website is to utilise a rel=canonical tag. The tag passes on the same value in terms of search engine ranking power as the 301 redirect, however it is much easier to implement and therefore requires less development time.

The tag tells the search engines that the page it appears on (the duplicate page) should be treated as a copy of the URL included in the tag (i.e. <link href="http://www.example.co.uk/page/" rel="canonical"/>) and that all of the links and content metrics that the search engines apply should flow back to the URL included in the tag rather than be attributed to the duplicate page.

So there you have it, 3 Free Tips on an important issue you, or your web developer should be considering on your website.

3 Free Tips - Getting More From Your Website In 2010

As Christmas and the New Year rapidly approaches, many businesses will be winding down for the year and attempting to plan for 2010. Following another tremendous year of growth and development in online marketing and the amount of business being done through websites, many will no doubt be planning how they can get more from their online presence in the New Year.

With that in mind, this months Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at 3 ways of Getting More From Your Website in 2010:

1. Regular Content - Regular (preferably unique) content on your website has been a valuable consideration for a couple of years now, but surprisingly many businesses still fail to make the most of it by publishing news, informative articles and guides on their sites. Not only does fresh content greatly assist with your search engine optimisation efforts due to the search engines' preference for regular new content, but with the early attempts to introduce real time search being implemented by Google, regular fresh content could be set to become even more important in 2010.

2. Social Media - The tremendous growth of social media sites such as TwitterYouTube and Facebook have meant that conventional methods of distributing PR, news and advertising are beginning to be left behind for more rapid and interactive channels. Many businesses are already using platforms such as social media to drive increased volumes of traffic to their websites and ultimately drive more business from their sites.

However, as these businesses are finding, social media can be a time consuming and occasionally unpredictable beast. Therefore it pays to have a structured plan for your social media, online marketing and website which converge to create a consistent message. It can also pay to integrate and automate some of the actions (as an example, whenever a new article is posted on Web Wise Business, it is automatically tweeted on our Twitter profile).

Therefore, social media is clearly a marketing channel worth considering if you aren't already using it, and if you are, it is worth reviewing your approach in order to ensure it is efficient and converges with your ultimate aims.

3. Conversion Optimisation - Getting traffic to your site is all well and good, but once they are there, you want them to complete a specific action, be it simply phoning you up, completing a registration or enquiry form, making a purchase etc. Increasing the likelihood that visitors will complete one of these actions can be largely dependent upon how they view and navigate your website. If the phone number is hard to see, or the "buy now" or "register" button hard to find, then naturally the amount of people calling, buying or registering through your site is going to be less.

Google recently commented that the install rate for Google Earth increased by over 10% when they moved the "Download" button 100 pixels higher up the page, to a more immediately visible placement requiring no scrolling to find. This is a great example of the kind of simple improvements that can be made in order to optimise conversion rates for desired actions on your website.

Many alterations can be as simple as moving the location of phone numbers or buttons, such as the Google example, while others may include more sizeable changes such as refreshing the design of your website in order to present a more modern and professional image. Either way, spending some time to analyse how easy to achieve the actions you want visitors to take when they arrive on your website are can really pay off.

So there you have it, Web Wise Business' three tips on simple ways you can improve the amount of business you get from your website in 2010.

3 Free Tips - How To Create a Social Media Following

As any online marketer will tell you, using social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc) to market your business or organisation can be one of the most effective methods of getting your message out there and getting links back to your website.

But once you've got your Twitter account set up, your Facebook profile and fan page created and your YouTube channel covered, just how do you plan to get a following of other users/potential clients/supporters to see and spread your message?

Well luckily, this month's Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at How To Create a Social Media Following.

1. Follow Me / Lead The Way - An easy "win" and the obvious place to start off with, getting your colleagues / employee's to follow your company or organisation profiles on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube is a good way to get some early followers who can spread your message. If your struggling to convince them "why?" you can always incentivise this by offering a prize for the individual who gets the most new followers / links to your organisation profile the most etc. This can also be a good way of introducing members of your team to social media in general and get them actively using it to drum up business / links.

2. Eyes On The Prize - As above, it never hurts to incentivise people to do what you want them to do. Offering prizes for the 100th person to follow you on Twitter, Facebook etc, can be a great way of getting followers quickly. While many will likely only do so in order to be in with a shot at the prizes, many will be too lazy to "un-follow" and so continue to receive your messages, while some may actually be members of your target audience. At the end of the day, it's still quicker, easier and cheaper to offer a bottle of decent whiskey, or a couple of bottles of wine to your 100th follower than to run a physical mail-shot campaign!

3. What's Your Purpose? Dell have used Facebook very cleverly to create a Fan Page that offers a valuable resource to "fans", and at the same time, allows Dell to know more about their following and easily interact / sell to them. With over 34, 600 fans following their profile, clearly the effort to create a series of 8-10 guides, and respond to fan comments from time to time pays off as the company are able to keep customers happy in a public manner, for all to see, and also maintain a position at the forefront of their target audience's mind as small business owners read their guides etc. This type of model could work equally as well for almost any business, you simply have to identify a need that your target audience has that you can fulfil for a minimum of effort and which is a natural step towards the sale of your services / products.

For example, recruitment companies could appeal to candidates by offering a series of interview techniques and tips, accompanied by short video clips which would obviously be of significant value to a candidate. In return, the company effectively builds it's database of candidates for vacancies.

3 Free Tips - How To Help Visitors Find What They're Looking For

We have no doubt all experienced the same frustration of trying to find information on a website, only to spend 10-15 minutes rummaging around before finally giving up to search elsewhere. When this happens, it almost always guarantee's we won't be using the particular website again in future, doesn't it?

What would you think if this was happening to visitors on your website? You'd be pretty annoyed yes? Afterall, every time a visitor can't find what they are looking for on your website, you have lost a potential sale/customer/interested party.

Therefore, this month's 3 Free Tips looks at how you can improve the on-site search functionality of your website and help visitors find what they are looking for.

1. Review Your Site Analytics - Start by collecting information about how your visitors are currently using search on your site. Your analytics package should include a feature to monitor the use and effect of your on site-search. Google Analytics hides this under Content -> Site Search. Use the site search instructions Google provide to expose your search query paramaters and you'll be able to view a dashboard in your analytics providing information such as; the percentage of visitors making refinements to their initial search, the average time spent on the site after searching and the percentage of searchers who left the site after seeing the search results.

2. Use Visitor Search Behaviour to Guide Site Structure - A quick review of the information gained from the step above will provide you with some quick improvements for your website. For example, if you find that a large volume of searches on your website are for a particular product you sell, for example a particular brand of hoover, this suggests that visitors are having to actively search for this product because it is not immediately visible on your website. Remember the golden rule of successful websites is not to make the user have to think. Your website structure or navigation may therefore benefit from being adapted to accomodate this, perhaps by including a specific page for the particular hoover, with a clear link on your homepage and catagorised navigation in your site menu structure (i.e. - Home > Hoovers > Branded Hoover Product).

3. Use Search Behaviour to Guide Site Content - Again making use of the information gathered from reviewing your site analytics, look at the search terms that receive high volume, but result in a high percentage of people leaving the site. In these cases, your visitors are telling you precisely the type of content or products (for e-commerce sites) they'd like you to provide. You can, and should, take note and action this right away.

3 Free Tips - How To Create Fresh Website Contenthttp://www.webwisebusiness.co.uk/tabid/128/default.aspx?article=3+Free+Tips++How+To+Create+Fresh+Website+Content 1323 Free Tips on How to Create Fresh Website Content from Web Wise Business, web developers in Scotland.Tue, 15 Sep 2009 00:00:003 Free Tips - How To Create Fresh Website Content3 Free Tips on How to Create Fresh Website Content from Web Wise Business, web developers in Scotland.
3 Free Tips - How to Create Fresh Website Content

The search engines like fresh content. For some time now, Google and it's competitors have put a lot of weight to websites that are kept up to date with new content. While keeping fresh, and preferably unique content on your website is an often challenging feat, it is a highly important task for assisting with your website's search engine rankings.

As with anything else, in order to be successful at producing fresh website content on a continual basis, it pays to have a good strategy in place. Knowing how to create, why create, when to create and publish, and where to present your content will be far more likely to result in success (be that increased sales, inquiries, or simply awareness of your website and business/organisation), than simply haphazardly applying irrelevant content on an infrequent basis.

Often, the intended target audience for your content will play a large part in determining both the type of content, and how it is created.

It is with this in mind, that this month's Web Wise Business 3 Free Tips looks at 3 methods for producing fresh content on your website.

1. The DIY Approach - The most obvious way of creating fresh content for your website, doing it yourself allows you the most control over the content that is produced, (potentially) ensuring that the aims of the content do not become blurred. The downside to this method is, of course, it can be difficult and time consuming to do. If you are not a great writer, or don't know what to say, you can always either delegate this task to an employee/colleague, or pay someone else to do it.

2. The Automated Approach -  If you can't find the time, or can't afford to be paying someone else to create your content, then adding fresh content to your website through the use of RSS feeds, or other related methods (such as Twitter feeds), can be a good alternative. Afterall, it requires a minimum of effort on your behalf, while providing regular content. The downside is, of course, that you have little to no control over the content that is produced, and therefore it may not fit well with the aims of what you are trying to achieve.

3. The Community Approach -  User generated content is perhaps one of the best means of producing fresh content for your website. Even small to medium sized community websites are capable of generating large amounts of fresh content, either from topical discussion, comments, or even from the creation of informative articles. Some obvious examples of successful community websites are Flickr - the photograph sharing website, YouTube - the video sharing site, Digg - an article and general content sharing website, and even sites like Amazon with their large number of product reviews. While you won't be required to produce as much content as a DIY approach, it is important that you still guide and encourage discussions by raising topics, or provide and encourage the use of facilities for others to do so. Community websites take a lot of work to establish, however, the gains from doing so can be huge.

If you would like to discuss creating your own community website, or introducing the ability to produce fresh content easily on your website, then we would be happy to hear from you.

3 Free Tips - How to Improve Your Brand Search Presence

Online brand presence is becoming increasingly important for businesses of all sizes. With companies both locally and globally contesting each other's company names as keywords, the more positions your company occupy in the rankings for searches for your company name, the better.

While Google limits websites to a maximum of  2 positions per search term, this months Web Wise Business3 Free Tips shows that there are a number of ways to gain more than just 2 rankings for your company name in order to improve your brand search presence.

Obviously as your own website is limited to only 2 rankings, you will need to get the other listings for your business from external websites. There are plenty of places online that this can be done, business directories, social media websites etc. The more reliable sources, the better. Below we have listed the top 3 places from which high ranking results can be gained.

1. Twitter -
The latest social media phenomenon, Twitter is an "easy win" for creating an additional high ranking search result for your business name. *Obviously the account has to be named after your business (i.e. Username: webwisebusiness, Name: Web Wise Business).

2. YouTube -
The largest video sharing website on the internet, YouTube is another easy win, especially if you have some video content to post under your brand name.

3. Blogs -
Google's own blogging service, Blogger, or rival Wordpress, allow you to quickly and easily create an additional link for your brand name through a company blog. Keep it ticking over with weekly or bi-weekly posts and you can help increase your dominance of search results for your company name, while at the same time providing additional information, news etc.

3 Free Twitter Tips

Twitter
, the latest social media phenomenon has garnered sizeable media coverage lately for its ability to allow individuals from across the globe to remain in communication on an almost continuous basis and for the speed with which news is spread over the platform.

However, beyond this there has also been much discussion in business circles as to how Twitter can be best utilised from a business perspective and about the value the platform can provide.

As we at Web Wise Business have recently launched our new automated integration with Twitter for posting news and events listings, we thought it would be appropriate to provide some pointers on how to use the platform effectively for your business in this months 3 Free Tips.

  1.  What's in it for your followers? - As with any social media platform, in order to have any hope of gaining any significant following  that can then be converted into value for your business, it is important to consider why someone would want to take the time to read what you have to say or even follow you in the first place. What's in it for them? What value are you providing them in return for them following you?

With What's On Central, we have enabled followers to quickly find out which events are on, when and where, with a quick link to the actual event listing for more information.

  2. Clearly present your business and what you provide -  When you create your business twitter account, be sure to create an appropriate and attractive background design, including your business logo and contact details. Also ensure that you provide an accurate description of what you do and a link to your website in the appropriate fields in order to make it as easy as possible for your followers to get to your website.

  3. Be a part of the community - Perhaps most importantly, be a part of the community on Twitter. Try to get involved in discussions relating to the services you provide or the industry in which you are involved. Such discussions can be found using the Twitter search function or a variety of 3rd party applications. Being involved is the easiest way to build your Twitter following and also present yourself as a respected authority on the services your business provides.

3 Free Website Tips

There are literally billions of websites on the internet these days, all competing for a share of our attention and time. According to research, a visitor to your website will make a judgement on it, and whether to continue viewing it, within 3 seconds. Therefore, obviously the design and appearance of your website is important.

However, perhaps more important is how easy your website is for visitors to use and continue to travel through in order to view all of your valuable content. There are hundereds, if not thousands of websites that, while nothing special visually, are so easy and intuitive to use and navigate that they generate vast amounts of business. Ebay is a perfect example of this. A very plain site, but which makes it so easy for visitors to get to what they want that appearance is almost irrelevant.

Therefore, with this in mind, this month's 3 Free Tips from Web Wise Business focus on How to Improve Visitor Experience On Your Website.

  1. Internal Linking - Make sure that your internal web pages link to other, relevant pages on your website. For example, if you talk about the services you provide on your "About Us" page, link to the specific service pages. Making it as easy as possible for a visitor to navigate your website with as little thought required as is possible will ensure that they quickly find what they want and move through your websites selling cycle.

  2. Clear, Concise Page Titles - Make sure your page titles are easy to understand and give a clear expectation of what the content on the associated page is likely to relate to. There is no point calling a page relating to HR Consultancy "The Only Advice You Need", visitors are going to find it confusing and harder to find the information they want, particularly if they are looking for HR Consultancy services!

  3. Display Contact Information - Just because you have a "Contact Us" page with all your details and an inquiry form on it you cannot guarantee that visitors will bother to visit these pages or click about to find your phone number or email address. Ideally you want to encourage visitors to take action (call/email you about your products or services or make an online purchase there and then) at the point at which their interest in what you offer on your website is highest - the specific product or service pages. Make sure your telephone number and email address are visible on every page of your website, particularly those pages which provide compelling and detailed information about what you offer.

Implementing these 3 Free Tips on your website, while seemingly simple ammendments, can vastly improve the amount of business or inquiries you receive and will also make for a far more enjoyable visitor experience.

Linking back to our article on How To Boost Your Online Presence Offline, this months 3 Free Tips explains How to Send People to Your Website.

Obviously driving visitors to your website is a huge part of having a successful website, afterall, if no-one see's your great website, then it clearly isn't providing value for money. While getting large amounts of traffic to your website can require significant effort and time, here are a couple of tips you can use to encourage people to take a look at your website:
  1. Incentivise - Give your potential customers a compelling reason to visit your website. Competitions work well here, as do prizes for interaction with the website. The latter is particularly useful on community websites for establishing user loyalty to your website as, in order to gain the prize, visitors have to get involved and contribute a certain amount or in a certain way. Typically, after the prize giving period has passed, these users will have become a part of the community and continue to stick around and contribute.
  2. Exclusivity - Offer something exclusive to your potential customers on the website that wouldn't otherwise be available to them. Obviously this is a bit of an old trick, but you don't have to labour it. Simply letting customers know that they could get a better deal on your product or service if they come through your website should help draw visitors in.
  3. Community - Community websites can work for many types of businesses, from car sales to insurance to kitchen equipment. At the most basic level, chances are, if your customer likes buying cars, they probably enjoy talking about them too. Providing a space for them to do so can encourage them to stick about on your site and draw more visitors in with their discussion.

Another interesting, though slightly different, example of a community type websites for insurance is Compare the Markets Compare the Meerkat website, complete with videos and images of funny looking Meerkats.

Obviously tying in with successful television advertising, this website is a different type of community website in that it doesn't allow for much discussion. It does draw in a lot of visitors though due to it's humourous nature and ensures that it isn't easy to forget Compare the Market when it comes time to search for car insurance!

However, it is worth bearing in mind that community websites aren't so "simples!" to do, requiring careful planning to develop successfully and need to be of a high enough quality to encourage people to interact. That said, clearly they can be hugely successful when done right.

3 Free Tips - Marketing Your Business Using YouTube

The rise in popularity of social media has lead to many businesses finding ways of using this platform as an effective means to market their product or services. One platform that has seen a particular rise in use by businesses for marketing purposes is YouTube.

YouTube, as you are no doubt aware, is Google's social media website that allows users to upload and view/share video clips for free. To help you understand why this might be a valuable platform for businesses, consider the following statistics:

There are over 85 million videos on YouTube. In July 2008, 5 billion videos had been viewed on the site. YouTube has over 258million registered users, of which, 50% view videos at least once weekly.

Can you see the value yet? With so many users viewing content regularly, YouTube is an ideal place to get your marketing message across. The fact that it is free to do so begs the question "why wouldn't you?". Therefore, Web Wise Business have put together 3 Free Tips - How to Market Your Business Using YouTube.

1. Plan Your Message - It is important to put some thought into your message if you want it to stand out from the crowd. Try to be concise and keep your video to no longer than 4 minutes in length. Don't feel the need to bombard the viewer with everything you want to say about your business. As with all types of advertising, the aim is to hit the viewer with one or two key messages that will make them want to know more about your product or services and ultimately contact you to do so.

For example, if you were selling web design services, instead of boring the user with technical information about what you can do, focus on the tangible impact on their business as a whole: "Would you like your business to grow, not shrink, in 2009? Would being visible to hundreds, even thousands more potential clients be more likely to make this possible? If you believe the answer is "Yes" then call Web Wise Business today on 01786 498 079 and find out what your new website could do for your business."

2. Remember to Include Contact Details - Your message is sorted and you have a closing statement with a good hook to ensure viewers are going to contact you regarding your services, but how can they contact you if you don't include the relevant information? Always remember to have a final image of your business logo, telephone number, email and web address so that viewers are well equipped to contact you about your services should they wish to. Ensure that this image stays on screen long enough for viewers to note the details they require.

It is also a good idea to introduce yourself and have your name appear in text at the bottom of the screen when you do so. After all, as the saying goes "people do business with people".

3. Engaging Title, Description and Your URL and Tags - It may seem like a minor part of the whole process, but the title and description you provide with your video can have a large impact on how likely people are to want to view it. Try to make your title and description interesting and engaging in order to catch the viewers eye when they search, but don't over promise or exaggerate what you are offering or you risk letting the viewer down and creating negative opinion.

Also, don't forget to include the URL for your website and a number of researched, relevant keyword tags in the description and tags sections when you submit your video.

With that in mind, here are Web Wise Business's 3 Free Tips for producing Great E-Newsletters.Fri, 20 Feb 2009 00:00:003 Free Tips - How to Create Great E-NewslettersThere are a couple of important things to bear in mind when creating your E-Newsletters to ensure that they make enough of an impact on those who open it that they want to read the articles contained within and therefore, click through to your website. <br/><br/>With that in mind, here are Web Wise Business's 3 Free Tips for producing Great E-Newsletters.

E-Newsletters  are a great way of keeping in touch with your clients and contacts. They allow you to keep them up to date with all the latest news and information about your business. Met people at a networking event that you would like to have know more about your business and what you have to offer? Simply add them to your E-Newsletter contact list and you can easily and regularly remind them of what you do and why, when they, or someone they know, requires the services you provide, they should work with you.

However, there are a couple of important things to bear in mind when creating your E-Newsletters to ensure that they make enough of an impact on those who open it that they want to read the articles contained within and therefore, click through to your website. With that in mind, here are Web Wise Business's 3 Free Tips for producing  Great E-Newsletters.

1. Have Goals or Purpose for Your Newsletter - It is important to have a particular goal or purpose in mind for your newsletter. What do you intend to achieve by sending it? Are you simply looking to increase general awareness of your business or are you trying to generate more business by making readers aware of a need for your services?  Ultimately, this goal or aim should guide you throughout the entire process of creating your newsletter, from what articles and information to include, to where to place particular content in order to have the most impact.

2. Engaging Presentation is Crucial - The layout and appearance of your newsletter are crucial to it's ultimate success. As soon as readers open your newsletter, they are going to make judgements and assumptions about your business and the quality of the services you have to offer based on your newsletter's appearance. Heard the expression "It's important to make a good first impression"? That holds true online too. The first impressions anyone who opens your newsletter gets from how it looks will have a massive bearing on how likely they are to read the information within and click through to your website. The layout of your content is also of significant importance, think carefully about where your readers eyes are likely to linger most and be sure to place your most important content in this area.

3. Great Content Makes Great E-Newsletters - Fairly obviously, quality, useful and engaging content will determine whether read your newsletter will continue to do so, whether they will click through to your website to find more and whether they will keep you in mind or even better, spread the word about your business to others. However, writing great content is something of an art. After all, you are writing for a global audience, but crucially, you are speaking to only one person at a time - the reader. Try taking a leaf from journalists when it comes to your writing style. Sell your content with the article titles, make it "need to know" and ensure it gets read and achieves your goals. Alternatively, consider hiring a third party to write your articles or provide consultancy.

If you would like to know more about the great E-Newsletter systems Web Wise Business have to offer, helping you to raise awareness of your business and reach a wider audience, contact our Stirling, Scotland offices on 01786 498 079, or email us and we will get back to you.

3 Free Tips - How To Use LinkedIn To Grow Your Businesshttp://www.webwisebusiness.co.uk/tabid/128/default.aspx?article=3+Free+Tips++How+To+Use+LinkedIn+To+Grow+Your+Business 73Tue, 03 Feb 2009 00:00:003 Free Tips - How To Use LinkedIn To Grow Your Business

As most people are no doubt aware, the internet has undoubtedly revolutionised many facets of business and how business is conducted. Yet one of the best and easiest ways of acquiring new business online is still criminally under utilised by many individuals and businesses - Online Networking.

Physical networking is something which has been a common feature in the business development plans of both sales and marketing managers and new start businesses alike. It is a well held belief that people do business with people they know and trust, therefore continual contact and relationship building is an important factor. Why, therefore,  are there so few British businessmen and businesswomen using the power of the internet to conduct these important aspects of networking?

One only has to look at the success of websites such as Facebook and MySpace to see how popular and successful online communication and relationship building have become. Now, you might be saying to yourself "But these sites are for kids and not business!", well then clearly you haven't heard of "Linked In". Linked In is a business networking website that allows its users to identify, make and maintain contact with other businessmen and businesswomen. It also has forum sections and "groups" where users can ask and answer business related questions.

So now that you know what Linked In is, here are 3 Free Tips from Web Wise Business on how to use Linked In to grow your business:

1.  Use Linked In to identify relationships between people you know and people you want to know

This is one of the greatest strengths of Linked In, the ability to see, at a glance, people you would like to know and identify whether they are connected to you in anyway through any existing business relationships. You could then request an introduction to the target individual you would like to know from your existing contact, and at the same time, acquire more detailed information about the individual and any business opportunities that might exist.

2. Use Linked In to promote your business and any significant news

When you have significant news about your business, for example, a big product launch or a new joint venture , you can use Linked In to notify your contacts by way of a profile update. Then, in your accompanying email message to your network, you could say “I would love to catch up with you - want to make time for a phone call?” This "keeping in touch" process can then spark conversations about opportunities both for you and your contacts.

3. Position yourself as an industry expert and promote your business to a wider group

In the user created forums on Linked In, of which there is at least one for practically every industry, you can get involved in conversations with others, and answer questions on matters relating to your industry. This allows you to effectively promote yourself as an expert in your area, as well as allowing for some modest self promotion.
